Sasha Jane Lowerson – Surfer (Australia)
If you struggle to understand surfing, this interview with a female surfer explains the situation.
Surfing is an example of a sport where the female category exists because of physical differences between males and females; and also to atone for the misogynist history of women’s surfing. This history is documented in the excellent documentary Girls Can’t Surf (trailer).

But is it OK to allow males in women’s sport at community sport level?
Youth and community sport is the incubation ground for representative and elite sport. If women and girls cannot find a safe and competitive environment then they will turn away from sports.
Community level coaches are taught that their sports need to be fun, engaging and fair for players. Learning new sports is challenging, and novices need to be encouraged.
But the guidelines say…

The guidelines misrepresent the law, and prioritise inclusion over fairness and safety.
